Combat Exclusion

Less than a decade ago, the potential repeal of the Combat Exclusion Policy painted headlines across the country; now, the first wave of many "combat arms" women are facing a decisive point in their military careers, asking themselves – should I stay or should I go? This summer, join Chandler and Johanna, two West Point graduates who have grappled with this decision themselves, as they explore the realities of gender integration's still imperfect reality, lending voices to the women and men on the frontlines of the United States military's recent efforts.

Chandler Cole

Chandler is a 2017 West Point graduate and recently transitioning Army Engineer Officer. She served as a route clearance platoon leader in Syria, as executive officer at Sapper Leader Course, and as an Aide-de-Camp in the Corps of Engineers. She will be leaving the Army to begin law school at Duke University in the fall of 2022.

Johanna Crisman

Johanna is a 2018 West Point graduate. She commissioned as a Field Artillery Officer and was initially assigned to Fort Stewart's Spartan Brigade. She served as a firing platoon leader in Poland as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve. Most recently, she served as an assistant professor of military science at South Carolina State University as part of the Patton Program. In 2021, she was selected to the Army Funded Legal Education Program to attend Duke Law in August 2022 and will transition to the Army JAG Corps upon completion of her degree.
